School Takes A Practical Approach
The Age
Friday December 15, 2006
DURING the year, students at Thornbury High School measured the interior of their houses. They looked at how much it would cost to renovate and repaint rooms, and then examined personal loan options to finance the job.
The activity was part of a year 10 maths project set by their teacher and school principal Peter Egeberg, who believes maths teachers need to be less "conservative" in their methods and relate maths to everyday life.Mr Egeberg says high school teachers could also look at developing stronger partnerships with their primary school colleagues, to work out what skills are needed for the secondary years. About half of this year's VCE graduates at Thornbury are taking at least one maths subject.
